Terms of Service

Last updated: 17 September 2026

K8 (“kate”) is a free message-scrambling tool operated by Transcom (Design Technology Ltd t/a Transcom). By using K8 you agree to these terms.

The short version: K8 scrambles your message in your own browser with strong AES-256 encryption. Your Pass Key is the only thing that can unlock it — keep it safe, share it only through a trusted channel, and never send it alongside the scrambled message. If a Pass Key is lost, we cannot recover the message for you.

1What K8 does

K8 encrypts and decrypts text entirely inside your browser using AES-256-GCM, with the key derived from your Pass Key. Nothing you type is sent to us. The scrambled output is produced on your device for you to share however you choose.

2Your Pass Key is your responsibility

The privacy of a scrambled message depends entirely on the strength and secrecy of your Pass Key. You are responsible for choosing a strong, hard-to-guess Pass Key, for keeping it secret, and for sharing it safely with your intended reader. Because everything happens on your device, we have no copy of your Pass Key or message and cannot reset, retrieve or recover either one.

3No guarantee — provided “as is”

K8 is provided free and “as is”, without warranty of any kind. AES-256 is an extremely strong, industry-standard cipher and, used with a good Pass Key, a scrambled message is not practically breakable. However, no security method can be guaranteed absolutely: a weak, guessable or leaked Pass Key, or malware on a device, can defeat any encryption. You use K8 at your own risk, and it should not be relied upon as the sole safeguard for high-risk or safety-critical information.

4Acceptable use

  • Use K8 for lawful purposes only.
  • Do not use it to conceal, plan or carry out unlawful activity.
  • Do not attempt to overload, disrupt, scrape or misuse the service.

We may withdraw or change the service at any time.

5Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Transcom accepts no liability for any loss or damage arising from use of K8 — including, without limitation, the inability to recover a message or Pass Key, or unauthorised access to a message resulting from a weak, shared or compromised Pass Key. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded under English law.

6Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Questions? info@transcom.co.uk.
